One myth I often hear, even among kali/escrima/arnis and SCA folks, is that rattan (the material used to make the sticks that kali and SCA people frequently use for practice), is a tree. Rattan is a palm, much more like a vine than it is a tree.The other myth I hear is that rattan is bamboo. Bamboo is hollow. Rattan is solid.
Just wanted to clear that up.
