Isometric (static contraction) exercise

It always amazes me that, even with mountains of historical backing, how much isometric exercises are ignored by fitness buffs in the United States. Strength gained from isometric training is a different type of strength than you get from other exercises.

Ross Enamait has a great blog post that includes some links to older books documenting isometric exercise as well as a do-it-yourself device he's made and given instructions to build.

With yoga's popularity in the states, interest in isometric exercise has certainly grown, but I believe it's relatively invisible to most people as an actual strength exercise. It is just one type of strength and yields significantly different results from different types of training.

Martial artists in particular should be interested in isometric training because of the significantly increased strength at particular angles. This is significant to trapping, blocking and posting.

Bruce Lee was certainly an example of the strength gains possible from a combination of isometric and traditional weight training.

His strength to size ratio was amazing.
